Introduced into the country at or shortly after, the Norman Conquest and Invasion of 1066, it is a locational surname from a village called Sainville in the department of Eure-et-Loire, Normandy. This place is so called from the pre 8th century French word "Saisne" meaning a Saxon, as in the Germanic tribes from Saxony, and the suffix "ville" meaning a large house or settlement. In England the enobled Saville family have held lands in Yorkshire since the 13th century, and during the English Civil War of 1640 - 1660, Lord Saville was a strong supporter of the Parliamentary side.
